The Flapper Role in Society
Although the flapper era was only from 1926-1928, they are widely remembered today because they drastically changed the role of women in society even though they were a minority. Flappers were generally young, urban, single, middle-class women that held steady jobs in the American Economy. Before the flapper era, many women did not have jobs outside of the home and if they did have jobs they were expected to quit if they got married or had kids, but that wasn't always the case with the flappers. Many Americans found the new flappers threatening because they represented a new moral order in society. They were now able to vote and they had much more freedom and many more equal rights than before. They supported the independence for women and they defied their old, Victorian, traditions and customs which caused many of their elders and forward-thinkers to dislike them. The flapper era greatly changed the role of women in society although many people didn't agree with it.
