The Flapper Look
The flappers were unmistakable because of their distinguished look. Women from generations before them would have long hair and long, elegant, dresses, but that wasn't the case with the flappers. They cut their hair to shoulder length or shorter (often called a bob), and their hemlines rose from their ankles to their knees, so the average amount of fabric in a dress decreased from 19 1/2 yards to just 7. With their dresses though, the flappers wanted to achieve more of a boyish look. They bound their chests and didn't wear corsets or anything that accented any part of the body. They wore tighter hats and high heels which were never seen in previous generations. The flappers also wore makeup, which used to be only worn by prostitutes and actresses. Along with their new attitude, the flappers also had a very distinguished look that was much different from previous generations, and hard to accept for some.
